I brought my family here, who were visiting from Southern California. They found the chicken mole surprisingly tender with great flavors. We also enjoyed the margarita flight, and the queso birria was delicious.
Came here for a late lunch on a Saturday and I was excited to try this restaurant since the pictures looked like a fun place with great food. So we met at the restaurant, Plenty of parking on the side and in the back. they have seating outside with covers and plenty of seats inside. I was greeted and we got sat almost immediately, she said she had to clean up the table in the room and I said sure. we ordered drinks and then food. the chips and salsa we got were good until our food came. drinks: -horchata -tamarindo -michelada -IPA'S food: -quesabirra -pozole -cheese enchiladas with green sauce -chips with guacamole (it was nice and creamy) -chilie relleno -elote -mamita salad with salmon all was so good, full of flavor and the service was great. never did we feel like we were being forgotten. we kept getting checked up on to make sure everything was fine. the vibe was great for lunch that I can only imagine that this place for dinner must be a super lively place. I did notice they do have drink towers, but we didn't participate in them. im so glad we got to try this restaurant. you should come and check it out.
The servers were amazing. The drinks and food wonderful! We had a table of six and were served promptly with friendliness. I will list what we had with the photos, it was all good. We all decided that the best bang for your buck is the Margarita Sampler. $25 for three good sized Margaritas. Come with a group for a birthday celebration, so fun.
The food was really delicious, we were given chips and salsa when we sat down, then ordered a mushroom / hongos quesadilla to start. The tortilla seemed homemade and very fresh. The pepitas salad was so good, and grilled salmon was perfect. Overall the service was good, even when they were really busy. It has a fun, loud, and lively vibe, good for a group dinner.
Papita salad with salmon Cadillac margarita Friendly bartender Great service Salad with green goddess dressing and pumpkin seeds Fresh and flavorful
This was our first time here, and we came for a birthday celebration. The first thing we noticed was the ambiance and environment. It was amazingly colorful and beautiful, with great use of lighting, colors, and textures. The place actually has a few different dining areas, and this added to the depth of the impact when we walked in. Of course, being greeted by a large "dead cow" was a great touch to begin with, and the kids loved it. We waited shortly and were shown to the enclosed patio dining area. It featured a fireplace along with space heaters, so it was pretty warm despite being a chilly night. Our server greeted us while others brought water to the table. The menu was also new to us, so although we had scoped it out on Yelp, we looked it over a bit to see if we missed anything good. For starters, we ordered a margarita flight - priorities! You get a choice of three flavors for this, and we tried the spicy cucumber, hibiscus, and classic flavors. Then, as the flight was landing (see what I did there?! ) we were ready to order the food. We started with a Papito salad (romaine kettuce, watermelon radish, avocado, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, and queso fresco with Green Goddess dressing) and quesadilla con hongos (crimini mushrooms, caramelized onions, thyme, garlic, epazote - an aromatic herb - and Oazaca cheese) for appetizers. Then we moved on and ordered a carne asada, a quesabirria (with birria braised short ribs, a chile relleno (stuffed with roasted corm zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and Oaxaca cheese in a roasted chili tomato sauce), and a kid's solo taco. The food arrived promptly, but it all came at once, salad and all. This is not a big problem, but it is not optimal. The food was hot and ready to eat. The dishes were good, and the carne asada and quesabirria were particularly well-liked. The salad was fresh and tasty, and the Green Goddess was a nice flavor change. The chile relleno was interesting, for the sauce was very soupy, and the vegetables inside added to that loose consistency; the veggies were different indeed, and not a bad idea. The sauce--yes, it did say roasted chili--was a bit too spicy. The quesadilla con hongos was very different. It had a "tortilla" like a thick masa, not a flour tortilla, and the mushrooms were plentiful and very earthy in flavor. It was great if you like mushrooms. We had room for dessert, so we ordered a churros and a tres leches cake. The churros were hot when they arrived, but the texture was not crispy but chewy. The chocolate sauce it came with tasted like the chocolate ice cream topping sauce from a bottle - not good. The tres leches lacked any real flavor, but there was lots of leche, which the kids liked. We have had better. They brought the birthday boy his own "birthday churros," which was a nice touch. The food overall was good, but lacking in some areas, such as the desserts. The service was excellent, with a large crew running dishes, refilling the waters, and clearing dishes promptly. Our server, Rolando, did a fine job coordinating everything for us. The margarita flight was a hit. There was just enough for a few adults to share a taste or two, and the cucumber and the hibiscus were the favorites. It is a great place overall, and considering the food, beverages, desserts, service, and ambiance, it was a 4.5 - we look forward to returning.
I wanted a quick bite and cocktail and walked it minutes before happy hour ended at 6 pm. The decor inside is colorful and fun. There are lots of seating inside and a lovely outdoor patio. Happy hour is only at the bar, sadly. I grabbed a spot at the bar and ordered all of the vegetarian items (mushroom quesadilla, guacamole, and beet salad) and the cod ceviche on the happy hour menu with a diablo margarita . The margarita was brought over quickly and it was very good. It's on par with Flores but at a better price! I drank it quickly...too quick as it was smooth down the hatch. The beet salad was refreshing with a light dressing. The slices of orange complimented the arugula flavors. I enjoyed this as a starter to balance out the entire basket of chips and salsa I ate. There's no shame. The cod ceviche had chunks of avocado and pico de gallo mixed in. I switched between the ceviche and then dunked into the guacamole. The guac was simple in all the best ways. Why complicate a good thing? The quesadilla de hongo was tiny but bursting with mushrooms. It had a tart salsa verde to break up the heavy cheese. I would order it again all again and come back for a proper dinner.
EDIT: 02/25/24 I've been several times since writing my first review and the place has become a favorite to stop by and have a drink while watching a game or to take the wife to have a snack while we're out and about. I've grown to like the veggie quesadilla. It's got nice flavor and has a nice balance of filling but not too heavy. We've also really grown accustomed to the different margaritas they have there. The Jalapeno has a nice kick to it and the Jamaica is my favorite. Rigo and Estuardo behind the bar are killin' it as always. Give it a shot! _ _ _ _ _ Not bad. Had a good experience but things could use a tune up. This restaurant has been a couple different names over the years. My wife and I tried to go several times and the first 2 attempts were RIDICULOUSLY long as far as wait time goes. The nice thing is that they offer valet parking (bring cash) on Friday/Saturday. We finally got a reasonable time reservation and gave it a shot. Yes, the restaurant was upgraded with new aesthetics in certain spots. If your a Novato native, you will recognize some others have not. We sat down and explored the menu. Some of their selections were amazing! Some of the others I've had better from a food truck. Our server was nice and fairly on it but we had to ask her 3 times for water. Don't get me wrong, were not the type of couple that orders just water at dinner, were a 3 shots of high end tequila and a beer with a water chaser (for some) at dinner. We explored the menu, we ordered the CHILLED AHI TUNA CRUDO and AGUA CHILE NEGRO which both were AMAZING. We ordered the latter spicy which delivered on the ask. We also ordered the QUESABIRRIA which was a little disappointing. I was surprised by that. The consume was surprisingly tame from a flavor profile perspective and I've had better at taco trucks. We also ordered some CHICKEN FLAUTAS and they were ok. They were a little light on flavor but the textures were there. All in all, this was a good place but for all the hype and wait needed just to get in the door it was slightly disappointing. The visual presentation of things added a nice touch to everything and I'm a big advocate of that. However with some more fine tuning this could be a 4-5 star place. One of the big saves for this place is RIGO the bartender. He has been loyally tending bar at this location for years. Always has a smile on his face and ready to make you a drink. My wife and I appreciate his customer service and barcraft. Just a heads up, if your looking to have a good time, you'll be well into the triple figures. The product may be a result of the populace but I'm used to a more flavorful experience. If you're reading this and have differing opinions, I'm more than happy to hear your thoughts. drop me a comment. -Todd
